Innersense Hair Products Review

Posted by Elizabeth Alex on

Thanks to my curl friends, I got my firstr Innersense hair product in 2018 and I loved it. But it wouldn’t have been a fair assessment to review a brand with only one product then.  So here we are in 2020! This is my Innersense Organic Beauty review of all the products that I purchased, and tested! I hope you find them useful; let me know if you do.

But first, a little Pregnancy Bias

Many women have changes in hair texture and growth during pregnancy. Changes in hair texture can make hair drier or oilier. Some women even find their hair changing color. Nails, like hair, can change during pregnancy. Extra hormones can make them grow faster and become stronger. Some women, though, find that their nails split and break more during pregnancy.

Guess what? Both the nails and hair contain the tough protein, keratin. The keratin forms fibers, which makes your nails and hair tough and strong. The lack or deficiency in protein can have issues with your hair and nails!

I am 32 weeks pregnant as I type this review for you. And lately, nothing seemed to be working. So I found that using products with more protein responded well. I am only assuming my hair isn't getting enough protein given my pregnancy and my diet. My hair is responding better to products with higher protein content. This was NEVER possible before!  That’s why I am convinced (and you may also notice) the Innersense Beauty Products are working so well for me. Yes these products have protein. Hair changes usually aren't permanent.  These products may not work for me later in case my hair doesn't need protein.

User discretion advised.

Pros of using Innersense Beauty Products

Let me tell you in painful detail why I love these products. Don't miss the golden nuggets of tips in there too.

I could detangle my hair with both these shampoos. Then again, since I wash and condition my hair every 3-4 days, I tend to have fewer knots and tangles anyway. Both shampoos lather a LOT and are coconut oil based.

COLOR AWAKENING HAIRBATH -  It says gentle cleansing. Yet I found this shampoo clarifying for my hair type. I Have 3B Medium/High Porosity. Here's why. It has Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate. This is a cleansing agent that could potentially be drying but is not as harsh as sulfates. It also has Hydrolyzed Rice Protein and Hydrolyzed Quinoa. This shampoo was strong enough to remove my silicone buildup and also prepoo oils!

HYDRATING CREAM HAIRBATH - As the name suggests, this is more of a moisturizing shampoo. It has similar cleansing agents and proteins as the color awakening shampoo.  The key difference is the addition of oils in this one like jojoba, Tamanu oil and Vanilla. This shampoo was unable to remove my prepoo mask.  Treat this one like a cowash! Use it only on quickie-washdays when you need a boost of moisture without any washday drama.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "I bought myself @innersenseorganicbeauty shampoo and conditioner (or hairbath and conditioner as they've dubbed it) on a whim, and loved it. At first I thought it was geared towards curly haired girls - an easy enough mistake to make because the brand is very well loved among the curly community - but they pretty much cater to all hair types. Pictured here is the Hydrating duo which I enjoy using whenever my hair is in need of extra moisture, but as someone with straight(ish) hair that is now in a pixie cut, I find the Pure Harmony duo to be much better suited to my needs - light, yet nourishing. 💁🏻‍♀️ " ~ @artofcleanbeauty Thank you Naomi for the hair love and exquisite captures of our brand! 🙏 Sending you lots of hair love and gratitude from Northern Cali all the way to the Emirates! 👋🏼 #cleanbeautygoddess

Both conditioners detangle my hair and have an amazing slip. I have also left these conditioners all in for fabulous no-product hair days! You can also try leaving most of the conditioner in, working with it intentionally. Finish with a gel on top for an easy wash day routine!

Both conditioners also have the same proteins as the shampoo. Hydrolyzed Rice Protein and Hydrolyzed Quinoa. However, I found no difference between the two in use.  Yet with ingredients, each has a hero oil that makes them a different. These conditioners are my favorite from the whole line. Both give me a noticeable shine.

The Innersense styling products are a bit tricky. Because these are concentrated, a little goes a very long way - but this is what they say. For me though, I had to use a generous amount of these creams listed below and also the foam for my hair type. You may need less or more depending on whether you have a looser or coarser texture.

QUIET CALM CURL CONTROL - This was my first Innersense Beauty product! One of my curl friends Deepti Avinash sent me this one as a gift and I appreciate the thought so much. Ever so thankful for this community :)  This cream works with all the brands I have paired with - LUS, Giovanni, Curly Ellie, Bouncecurl. Even though I am heavy-handed with it, it does not weigh my hair down. This is a protein, aloe, and coconut FREE curl cream! Nothing, don't know about you but protein-free products and coconut-free products excite me!

INNER PEACE WHIPPED CREME TEXTURIZER - Did you know? The second ingredient in this product is beeswax. Although a naturally derived ingredient, this wax is not CG approved. This is the only Innersense Beauty product I've tried that's not CG.

You see kids, this is why probably definitely maybe we want to stick to using Curly-Girl-Approved products only Or at least use water-based products for textures similar to mine, like we've been discussing the past few weeks.⁣ ⁣ I'm testing @innersenseorganicbeauty products there days, and used their "INNER PEACE WHIPPED CREME TEXTURIZER" last night. Beeswax is the second ingredient. According to "These waxes and oils can cause buildup that is difficult to remove and keeps your hair from absorbing moisture properly" hence beeswax isn't CG approved. But that's only part of the issue - this can be solved with effective cleansing techniques (more on this later) ⁣ ⁣ Me? I must've used too much also; it felt heavy after applying it and feels heavier still as we progress into day 2. While I have used other products with beeswax and honestly feel beeswax is a natural+beneficial ingredient for hair, I do not appreciate the heavy feeling this product is giving me. Even after I fluff it comes back to the same flatness...⁣ ⁣ Disclaimer: This is NOT a review. I do appreciate the definition and shine it's giving me but have to decide on the right quantities for my hair and that will only come with practice. Will get back to about how I deal with this product in a few weeks time. Meanwhile...⁣ ⁣ 𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐂𝐆 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫?⁣ If not, how do you "cheat" please confess in comments 🤪😂🙇🏻‍♀️⁣

But Me? I may be addicted to this creme. Mixing it with other curl creams or scrunching it in at the end of my styling routine gives a botox-effect to my curls. I mean, it enhances and improves my curl texture in a plumpy way that other CG creams may not. But, since I am heavy-handed with it, it weighs my hair down on wash day but it gets better as the week progresses. Sure, it takes a few clarifying shampoo washes and an ACV rinse to remove it all from my hair. But if it can give me a week of tension-free definition then I’m game! Note, it has low protein content with Hydrolyzed Quinoa at the bottom of the ingredient list.

I CREATE LIFT VOLUMIZING FOAM - My curl friend Elaine adores this foam! I have seen her use it alone or with her products. BUT THEN I failed to remind myself that although I love her, we have different textures! Elaine has a finer/looser curl pattern than I do. Besides, I do live in a tropical country that’s hot and humid most of the year. This foam has honey as one of the key ingredients. Honey is a humectant and as a styler, it works much better in lower dew points a.k.a. colder/cooler climates.

I have used this foam alone, with their Quiet Control Cream and it failed me. I also used a generous amount to make it work for me but nope. With only about 4 tries the bottle is ¾ gone already. The only way I use it now is to sandwich it between the cream and their gel. Don’t mind me though. You may love this foam and that's ok too! Our preferences and individual hair needs are different is all.

I CREATE VOLUME - As the name suggests, using this as a leave-in before my 123 gel method gave me a lot of volume! It’s has a creamy texture like any regular leave-in conditioner.  and only one protein Hydrolyzed Rice Protein towards the end of the ingredient list. If you have fine hair or looking for products that give you volume then this is what I recommend you use. Yet, again, this also has honey and glycerin. So if you live in a hot or humid area, your curls may need a glycerin-free gel over this to work. Learn more from my humidity tips here

I CREATE HOLD - This gel is strong hold! I noticed that right off the bat because I usually prefer soft-medium hold gels so this one surprised me. A good surprise too because it’s a protein-free gel!... and you know how I feel about protein-free products :)  It clumps my curls and keeps it defined for longer days. It also gives a nice gel cast but the best part of this gel is that a little goes a long way. Don’t use too much. For me, two pumps for each side are enough and I style my hair in two sections. I find that this gel works best with the Innersense Beauty products only. Note, this gel has a film-forming ingredient “Hydroxyethylcellulose” that may cause flaking if you use too much of the gel.

Cons of using Innersense Beauty Products

The Innersense Beauty products are balanced but only if you use the whole line together. For best results, I recommend using the whole line together instead of mixing and cocktailing it with other brands. That’s how I use it to get lovely results each time.

Some may be allergic to orange extract used in all their products.

Ingredient “Potassium Hydroxide” the 5th ingredient in the gel is as harshly alkaline as lye. Highly caustic. Denatures hair and can dissolve it. Can cause severe burns on skin.

These products may not work for those with protein-sensitivity.

Lastly, I am a bit nervous to buy them again since they are out of my budget too.

Use your discretion if you do.
