If brushing curly hair is such a taboo, then why are curly girls raving about this? The original “hairdressers’ hairbrush”, the Denman Brush burst into the curly hair community in 2016.

I started my journey in mid-2017 and I was looking for products for curl clumping and there it was! After using it several ways for nearly two years, learn more from my Denman brush review below.
What is a Denman Brush?
Denman sells over 40,000 brushes each MONTH! Manufactured in Ireland, shipped from the UK, these hairbrushes are not available in retail India, yet. However, hairdressers and barbers around the world swear by this brand. Their exciting professional tools such as brushes, combs, and accessories are manufactured with an innovative technique. This brand has a range of styling, detangling, grooming, and even scented brushes! Denman has a brush for every need, really and I think that's just brilliant.
Is the Denman Brush good for Curly Hair?
For curly hair, though, you want to use the classic styling brush; the preferred choice for curlies around the world!
- Narrow Base: Allows narrow exposure to focus on each curl section for clumps.
- Rubber Padding: Prevents static, unlike plastic brushes that cause frizz!
- Nylon Teeth: Vegan, flexible, and designed to be gentle on both tangled and detangled hair.
- Adjustable bristles: Make changes to suit your style and curl pattern preference.
- Link to buy in India, here - its the same link I used when I purchased mine in July 2017
How to Use Denman Brush for Curly Hair
Your hair is fragile and so, you want to be careful with any product you use.
#1. Detangle with Denman, but only with a product.
Your curls are fragile; brushing and tugging dry curly hair carelessly may cause breakage. Detangle with our fingers first, apply conditioner on wet or damp hair and then use the Denman brush from mid-length hair. Don't let styling products touch on your scalp! I don't use this during my clay treatments or ACV rinses
#2. For even Product Distribution
Whether you use the Denman with your favourite conditioner in the shower or to style after, use your Denman brush to spread the product evenly to achieve the best definition for curly hair.
#3. Use Denman to prevent Frizz (yay!)
Don’t be fooled! More than the brushing action it is the rubber padding base and the nylon bristles that help smoothen all the flyaways. The products you use make a big impact. So using the Denman brush may help you prevent frizz.
#4. Denman for styling, but before gel
In my experience, Denman-brushing with the gel causes frizz. You want to detangle with your leave-in first, graze your curl cream over and then use the Denman to enable your desired curl pattern. Once the curl clumps are formed, scrunch in your gel. Some brush with their gel in also but that's on soaking wet hair. I prefer damp styling so I don't brush after my gel goes in.
#5. Modify rows for desired curl definition
For tighter and smaller curls, keep all the bristles of your Denman brush. I prefer bigger, fatter curl clumps and to achieve that, I remove alternate rows. I also found that the modified rows are gentler for curly hair to detangle too, so win-win! You can keep three or four if that works better for you. Remember, all of us are different. Trial and error is the way to know what's best for you.
Gently peel the top rubber padding out and adjust rows according to your preference.
Remember to dismember your Denman Brush often, to wash and clean the insides too!
Is Your Denman Brush a fake?! Note Red Flags here
- The base may be bright orange (instead of the original salmon-orange)
- The bristles may feel hard like plastic (instead of the soft nylon teeth)
- The handle may be dark brown (instead of the original jet black colour.)
How I use Denman Brush
I use the 7-row brush. Here's a typical routine whenever I feel like using this brush (I don't use it every time) frankly I forget i even have ti sometimes :(
- Apply leave-in
- Finger detangle
- Apply curl cream
- Divide your curly hair into sections.
- Move Denman gently from mid-length.
- Shake the brushed section to encourage clumps.
- Lock and seal the curl clumps by scrunching in a gel
- For best results, air dry for 1-2 hours; Apply little gel again and diffuse dry.
Please note, I do not use the brush over my gel.
